How Do I Know You?

An Exhibition of 12 of My New Large-Format Monoprints; hand-printed on a large gelatin plate, often in multiple layers of imagery.

I adore the tactile nature of the hand-printing process! The real fun, in addition to working directly with my hands, is in the unexpected outcome of each print, as there are so many variables involved:  time, temperature, humidity, thickness of paint applied, type of paper used as a substrate; type of pigments (transparent or opaque) and so on. Endless experimentation and play!

This series is about the inner emotions related to dementia and the real impacts of memory loss on our family members and the outer world.

About This Series

My own experiences with my dad’s early Alzheimer’s (starting in his 50s), as well as with other family and friends, pulled me to try to express his inner emotions, as well as the challenges created for family, friends, and other caregivers.

As my dad’s communication abilities declined, I began to scream inside. I could see his increasing self-consciousness, his frustration, and his anxiety at not being able to recognize his friends by name.

My pain as his only daughter was highest when I could clearly see that he was embarrassed and acutely aware of his difficulties. He could no longer express his frustration in words. Later, when he was less aware, he seemed to be more at peace, but his life became so small and also quite difficult for my mom and his caregivers to manage.

You may also know someone who had Alzheimer’s, or maybe you notice early memory loss in yourself. I believe there is a universality of our experiences here. I hope that this art exhibit stimulates personal discussion and reflection.

I hope to see you!
